Kyle Stedman’s essay Annoying Ways People Use Sources includes writing techniques other writers use that he believes to be annoying and unhelpful when it comes to sources. He calls one of these errors “Dating Spider-man”, where writers introduce and end their paragraphs with a quote. For example:
“Every level of Cuban dance is offered every week,” (Azucar). Azucar dance company clearly offers Cuban dance at the beginner level.
He believes this style of writing is wrong because the paragraph can seem confusing with no context of the topic. Stedman argues that introducing a paragraph with a quote can be powerful, but not on every paragraph. He advises that writers choose only the first or second paragraph to begin with a quote.
As a writer, I am guilty of committing this annoyance plenty of times. According to Stedman, I can fix this by introducing the quote with context of the topic.
Stedman suggest ranking the annoyances in order pretending I am a college professor. From a professor’s point a view I would rank them in order of Uncle Barry and his Encyclopedia of Useless Information, I swear I did Some Research, armadillo roadkill, dating Spider-Man, Am I in the Right Movie?, I Can't Find the Stupid Link. I would imagine these are common mistakes students make, and professors have to deal with.
As a newspaper editor, I would rank them as I Can't Find the Stupid Link, I swear I did Some Research, Uncle Barry and his Encyclopedia of Useless Information, armadillo roadkill, dating Spider-Man, and Am I in the Right Movie?. Newspaper editors would strees more about the grammar before flow and awkwardness.
As a popular blogger, I would rank them in order of I Can't Find the Stupid Link, Uncle Barry and his Encyclopedia of Useless Information, I swear I did Some Research, Am I in the Right Movie?, armadillo roadkill, and dating Spider-Man. Bloggers would value researcher etiquette and summarization.
As a college student, I would rank them in order of I Can't Find the Stupid Link, armadillo roadkill, dating Spider-Man, Uncle Barry and his Encyclopedia of Useless Information, I swear I did Some Research and Am I in the Right Movie?. The flow of the paper and finding research material is well liked by colleges students.
